Brief Description

This module provides students with the opportunity to examine and analyse topical issues in business and the international market place. Using contemporary examples students will investigate strategic issues in the international environment such as debt, finance, labour mobility, market developments etc. Exact topics will depend on the issues of the day.

Indicative Syllabus

This module considers a number of strategic issues arising from the changing international context of business. Potential topics include issues and policies surrounding globalisation, trade theory and liberalisation, the emergence of the new world order, global financial and currency risk, economic integration, international marketing and human resource management, strategic alliances and market penetration and issues related to international corporate governance related to both private and public sectors.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Extract from a variety of relevant sources the main international business issues of the day. (PLO1,2,3,4)
  2. Apply standard business tools in the evaluation of opportunities and threats within international markets, using current material. (PLO4,5)
  3. Analyse the speed with which change takes place in the international community with reference to live issues and topical outcomes. (PLO2)
  4. Evaluate policy which encourages, moderates, and regulates business activity in international markets. (PLO1,2,3,4)
  5. Communicate critically the need for international co-operation in international business matters.(PLO1,6)
  6. Debate the role of 'ethical behaviour' when cultivating sustainable and fair opportunities in developing markets (PLO3,4)
