Brief Description

This module tackles strategic people management issues raised by the emergence of the global operating context that most, if not all, businesses face today.

Indicative Syllabus

An evaluation of strategic human resources management (SHRM) to debate the nature and practicality of human resource management (HRM) at a strategic level using examples from private, public and third sectors. This is followed by international and comparative human resource management topics to ground the debate in a global operating environment. The module concludes with an examination of the relative merits of available systems to strategically manage human resources and knowledge, and the sustainability of such strategies, from a theoretical, practice-based and policy perspective.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Examine the concepts of SHRM and contrast this notion with that of strategic management. (PLO1,4)
  2. Understand and evaluate the concept of an organisations Model of Employment, and the organisational levers available to manage human resources in such a way as to contribute to sustainable competitive advantage. (PLO2,4)
  3. Compare, contrast and evaluate regional HRM systems in Europe, Anglo-America, Asia-Pacific, and BRIC.(PLO3,4)
  4. Understand the significance of culture to organisational behaviour and HRM practice in general and apply the practices needed to carry out HRM in trans-national/international/international-subsidiary organisations. (PLO3,4)
  5. Evaluate where and when international HRM changes local business systems.  (PLO1,3,4,5)
