Brief Description

The purpose of the module is to provide students firstly with an in-depth understanding of the issues involved in undertaking in-depth academic research in the business, management and marketing fields culminating in an individual piece of research for a dissertation.  

Indicative Syllabus

Indicative topics include

  1. Planning research and formulating research questions and objectives
  2. The relationship between research and the literature
  3. Exploring philosophical paradigms in research
  4. Exploring the nature and investigative strategies in qualitative and qualitative research
  5. Communicating research outcomes in the form of a dissertation
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Clearly define and justify a research problem in relation to its applicability and importance to the business context and student’s own field of study (PLO1,4,5)
  2.  In the context of the student’s own dissertation critically evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources (PLO4,5)
  3. Demonstrate appreciation and application of research methodologies (PLO2,4)
  4. Work independently and creatively to accomplish an individual piece of research (PLO5)   
  5.  Reflect upon the approach they have adopted for a piece of work to identify its strengths and weaknesses (PLO4)
  6. Communicate and present their ideas coherently in the form of dissertation paying attention to clarity of argument and supporting evidence and the use of appropriate language, diagrams and tables (PLO6)
