Brief Description

Globalization is forcing business operations managers to increasingly think on an international scale. This module builds upon previous study and explores how different organizations manage their operations strategically in a global environment. A specific range of key international operations management themes will be introduced including international outsourcing and logistics network planning.  It will enable students to think systemically about fundamental processes and management skills involved in international operation.

  3.  International Outsourcing and Supplier Network Development
  4. Lean Systems and Six Sigma
  5. International Supply Chain Management 
  6.  Logistic Network Design 
  7.  Information Technology and Global Operation
  8. Risk Management in Global Operation
  9. Global Operation Practice: Private, Public and Third Sector
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Analyse key operational performance criteria for each area of operation activities and pinpoint the critical issues for international operation for performance improvement.  ( PL 1)
  2. Critically evaluate the crucial components of international operation’s strategic vision and the factors that influence the decision required by the Operation manager 
  3. Evaluate customer value in a service/manufactured product and discuss how international operations can increase customer value and contribute to the competitive advantage of the firm. (PL 1 and PL 2)
  4. Identify the tools and techniques that operation managers use to support the four main strategies of quality, cost minimization, customer responsiveness and innovation.PL 3)
  5. Apply operation management frameworks for designing, diagnosing and improving operation both in domestic and international context. (PL 4)

002: 40% Coursework: Group work, presentation: 300 words or equivalent
Special Assessment Requirements

Marks for each individual student in group work will be adjusted based on the individual student’s overall contribution. The approximate word count contribution per individual for the group work is 300 words (or equivalent). Please note that is only an approximate and may vary depending on the number of individuals per group.
