Brief Description

In the light of the now established phenomenon of globalised businesses and markets, this module begins by examining the importance of cultural norms and identities based on learned attitudes, values and beliefs and their impact upon the conduct of business operations.  An analysis of the depth and extent of adaptations of organizational strategy and behaviour which are necessary to achieve successful outcomes in this global environment is conducted.

Indicative Syllabus

Culture in different private sector business contexts; frameworks for the understanding of dimensions of culture; culture theories; the cultural globalisation debate; language, culture and communication; culture and national policies and institutions; national management models and transferability; cross-cultural management; intercultural negotiation; the future.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Effectively identify the influences of cultural factors on the perceptions and behaviour of people in business contexts in different parts of the world and predict their likely effects on the experience and outcomes of intercultural negotiations. (PLO 3)
  2. Apply a range of appropriate theoretical frameworks in the critical analysis of intercultural business management. (PLO 2 and 4)
  3. Differentiate between the negotiation techniques favoured by different cultures and offer recommendations for the mitigation of problems caused by cultural misunderstanding. (1 and 3)
  4. Evaluate the relative merits of selected theoretical frameworks and critically reflect on how these shape our understanding of cultural factors in the business environment. (PLO 4)
  5. Work effectively with others in the preparation of group presentations and discussions. (PLO 5)
  6. Communicate effectively in writing for assignments and orally through group discussions and presentations.  (PLO 6)
