Brief Description

The module aims to explore existing theory and practice with regards to 'people resourcing'. Using the resource-based view of the firm, social exchange theory, and the agency/stakeholder theoretical perspective, this module also looks beyond practice into some consideration of the different philosophies that might be taken to staffing. Students will learn to both apply well known practices, and to critique their use based on academic theory in the discipline.

Indicative Syllabus

Major approaches to job design in public, private and third sectors; policies and  issues in employment markets; approaches to raising recruitment profile; the use of assessment centres; legal and ethical issues in selection; negotiating reward packages; promoting productivity; performance management; staff retention policies, and strategies to reduce turnover, across public, private and third sectors.

Learning Outcomes

The student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand the principles and importance of employee resourcing within an organisational context (PLO1-3)
  2. Evaluate the contribution of job design (including designing for ergonomics and flexibility) to organisational branding and success (PLO1&4)
  3. Identify and judge the relative merits of recruitment and selection methods (PLO1&4)
  4. Critically apply legislative frameworks and ethical models to recruitment and selection methods (PLO2&4)
  5. Identify and evaluate the primary strategies adopted by companies when negotiating reward packages (PLO1&4)
  6. Identify and critical evaluate the tools and methods for managing performance, retention, turnover and redundancy (PLO1-4)

Special Assessment Requirements

Marks for each individual student in group work will be adjusted based on the individual students’ overall contribution. The approximate word count contribution per individual for the group work is 300 words. Please note that is only an approximate and may vary depending on the number of individuals per group.
