Brief Description
Indicative Syllabus

The syllabus explores leadership theories and followership concepts. It considers the nature of leadership, leadership versus management, power, politics and conflict, trait theories, situational theories dispersed/distributed theories, transactional and transformational views. In addition contemporary issues of the impact of gender, ethics, diversity and international or cross-cultural aspects of leadership, authentic and worldly perspectives. It addresses these in public, private, not for profit and international contexts.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  1. Discuss the nature of leadership and distinguish between leadership and management. (PLO 1)
  2. Identify and explain the major theoretical approaches to leadership and discuss how these can be applied in practice with reference to leader power and influence. (PLO1, 2)
  3.  Demonstrate a critical appreciation of the practical and theoretical aspects of leadership in different contexts and diverse peoples. PLO 1,3)
  4. Examine the development of leaders and managers through formal and informal interventions. (PLO 1, 2)
  5.  Analyse and evaluate the ethical, organisational, social and environmental challenges and constraints faced by today’s organisations and their implications for future leadership practices.(PLO 1,3 and 4)
  6. Critically reflect on and communicate academic and personal understandings of the value of leadership and management through engaging in discussions, written assessments and independent reading. (PLO 4, 5 and 6)

Assessment (For further details see the Module Guide) 001: 30% Coursework: Individual, standard written: 600 words or equivalent and 15 minute in-class discussion
