Brief Description

This module allows students to develop their understanding of the reasons why businesses may become involved in the international arena and the strategies they adopt to meet the challenges and respond to the opportunities in this environment

Indicative Syllabus

The module enables students to analyse the impact of external environmental factors such as culture, financial systems, entry barriers, technological developments, and risk factors which affect the policies, operations and strategies of private, public and third sector organisations in various parts of the world. The module will seek to build on students' understanding of the international business environment which they have developed in previous parts of their programmes.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand the environmental factors and/or developments which may lead an established business to enter the international business arena. (PLO1,2,3)
  2. Assess the factors which contribute to an organisation's success in the domestic marketplace and consider the extent to which these factors may have to be adapted to the needs of foreign markets to achieve international success. (PLO2,3,4)
  3. Review the impact of international and supranational bodies and agencies on the international trading environment. (PLO3)
  4. Identify the alternative strategies available to an organisation operating in the international environment. (PLO1,2,3)
  5. Analyse and evaluate the ethical and environmental opportunities and constraints in the conduct and operations of international business. (PLO3)
  6. Work both independently and with others, and to communicate clearly (PLO5,6)
