Brief Description

This module aims to analyse the organisations internal environment and the interactions that occur within this. It is designed to develop an understanding of theory, practice and policies of management in a variety of modern organisational contexts; private, public and third sectors. It does this by encouraging the development of students as critical, skilled, ethical and professional participants in their own development as potential managers.

Indicative Syllabus The program will cover three themes:

1.Understanding the internal organisation.

Functions in organizations

Structures of organisations (private, third & public sector)

Management of change

Culture, politics and power

2.People within the internal organisation

People as individuals within organisations

People and teams & networks within organisations

Leadership and exercising control, authority, power & influence

Approaches to managing performance & motivation, focussing on job design and results

3.The individual in organisations

Skills needed to develop as an effective employee and managers within organisations

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to

  1. Identify and analyse a wide variety of organisational types and purposes, their governing structures and frameworks, across a range of sectors. (PLO 1)
  2. Examine the principal internal structures and functions necessary to manage organisations in competitive environments. (PLO 1)
  3. Understand the concepts, theories and policies relating to the sustainable and ethical management and leadership of a range of employee groups in a range of organizations.  (PLO 2)
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the interface between the organisations structures, people and performance (PLO2 PLO 3)
  5. Assess the impact of a range of management activities on organisations and the people within those organisations. (PLO 2) 
  6. Demonstrate an essential people management skill set for working both as an individual and as a member of a team at different levels, across networks within an organisation.(PLO4 PLO5)

Assessment (For further details see the Module Guide) 001: 15% Coursework: Individual, standard written: 600 words
002: 15% Coursework: Individual, standard written: 600 words
003: 70% Coursework: Group work, other: 2800 words or equivalent
Special Assessment Requirements

Students will be allocated into groups to support for Part 003 research purposes.

Students will be required to submit an individual report for Part 003.
