Brief Description

This module aims to analyse the business organisation as an open system, examine the interaction between the organisation and its stakeholders, and interpret the relative influence of the micro- and macro- environment.

Indicative Syllabus

The module focuses on the private sector organisation and the relationship it has with its environment. The approach taken is through an analysis of the bilateral interaction between stakeholders and organisations. The role of shareholders and customers will be examined through a discussion of their financial and marketing relationships. The module will also cover the environmental influences on the organisation by examining the legal, political, economic, social, ecological and technological factors at a global, international, national and industry levels. How organisations need to make sense of their environment and tools that can be used to reduce uncertainty are considered.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  1. Identify an organisation’s purpose, its stakeholders and the basic principles of its governance. (PLO1,3)
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the interface between the organization and its environment, the role of uncertainty and the impact that the environment has on management decisions. (PLO1,4)
  3. Analyse the general (both international and national), industry and marketing environment in which organisations operate. (PLO2,3,4)
  4. Analyse and interpret an organisation's financial performance (PLO1, 2,3,4
  5. Evaluate practice in a range of organisational sectors with a view to recommending courses of action for management (PLO3,4,5,6)

Marks for each individual student in group work will be adjusted based on the individual student’s overall contribution. The approximate word count contribution per individual for the group work is 400 words (or equivalent).
