Brief Description This module provides an introduction to the management of change. Students will be encouraged to reflect critically on the nature and process of change in organisations. The module will focus on the strategic aspects of organisational change and explore these at the levels of corporate decision-making and affected groups and individuals.
Indicative Syllabus Environmental change and organisational response. Nature of the change process. Planned and unplanned change. Politics of change and conflict resolution. Organisational change and culture. Organisational change and structure. Role of managers, leaders and change agents. Hard and soft models for change. Evaluating change.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Analyse the relationship between environmental change and organisational capability and responsiveness to external factors and internal operating constraints.
b) Analyse the nature of change and evaluate concepts related to top-down and bottom-up approaches to change, planned and unplanned change, intended and unintended outcomes of change.
c) Explore the concept of organisational politics and its impact on change and analyse strategies for resolving conflict.
d) Analyse and evaluate the relationship between organisational culture and change.
e) Analyse and evaluate the relationship between organisational structure and change.
f) Analyse and evaluate the role of managers, internal and external change agents in the promotion and implementation of change.
g) Analyse and compare hard and soft models for change and anticipate situations where each of these may be appropriate.
h) Summarise factors that affect change outcomes and critically appraise attempts to promote strategic change.



ii. Skills

By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
Application of numerical techniques: evaluating research evidence to assess the extent to which research methods influence research results.
Problem solving: analysing critically case study evidence and evaluating models of change.
Communication and literacy: analysing critically prescriptive management writing in class exercises, assignment preparation and examination; examining documents to detect particular biases.
Information and communications technology: researching electronic sources for material in relation to assignment preparation.
Working with others: analysing critically case study evidence and other small groupwork activity. Independent learning and working: researching material for assignment.
