Brief Description This module is concerned with the tools and techniques used within organisations in the selection, organisation and management of their operating systems in pursuit of corporate and market objectives.

The module examines in depth the principal activities Operations Managers perform in manufacturing and service organisations. It will be of particular value to students undertaking a placement year, but develops clear links with strategic management in Level III.

Indicative Syllabus The module will examine the various techniques employed by organisations to design an effective and efficient transformation process that satisfies all stakeholders in the business.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Explain the inherent conflicts in managing an operation and the need to balance conflicting requirements in arriving at informed decisions.
b) Analyse the need to match the characteristics of the operating system to the needs of the market, the customer and the competition.
c) Analyse the factors which determine the choice of an appropriate operating system.
d) Evaluate the conflicts which may arise in managing specific operating systems.
e) Analyse specific dimensions of the system to find solutions to internal conflicts.
f) Evaluate the interactions between operating decisions and other functions (eg Marketing, Finance, HRM).



ii. Skills

By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
Problem Solving: The application of various operations management techniques to case studies. Working with others: Small problem solving groups during tutorials and group based assignment.
Independent Learning and working: Be able to relate independent reading to the analysis of case material.
Specific Vocational Skills: : Be able to relate teaching and learning to everyday business situations.
