Brief Description This is a self-initiated theoretical and investigative project that offers an opportunity for students to research a topic of interest in the form of a written dissertation. In consultation with an allocated tutor, students agree a suitable project which will allow them to demonstrate a high level of research, analytical and presentational skills.
Indicative Syllabus This module requires students to undertake academic research in the form of a written dissertation. Students can expect 3 hours tutorial help, which may include group meetings as well as individual tutorials and email contact. Although tutors will provide advice and comment on draft work and recommendations for reading, the responsibility for the dissertation and bibliography lies with the student.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they have:
a) a sophisticated and extensive grasp of their topic area
b) a sound understanding of how to structure a theoretically informed argument.
c) a highly developed awareness of the cultural context in which broadcast journalism operates and an ability to communicate that awareness in their analyses



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) demonstrate a level of research skills necessary for producing a dissertation
b) engage in academic/journalistic debate at a significant level with their dissertation tutor c)demonstrate advanced skills in independent learning
