Brief Description This module provides students with the opportunity to undertake a negotiated independent study. The content and proposed methodology for achieving assessable outcomes will be agreed with tutor based on student's written proposal. Prior experience and realistic expectations will be factors in determining appropriateness of proposal. A substantial body of written or practical work is the main envisaged outcome however the proposal may also include an agreed period of work placement. Students will carry out a compulsory period of industrial placement in a broadcast journalism workplace (radio, TV or on-line) for a minimum of two weeks up to a maximum of four weeks at one or more workplaces. This will provide invaluable experience of communication, broadcast journalism skills and media practice in a working environment. Students will return from the placement with examples of work produced, a daily log and research materials from which they will write up a placement report which includes written feedback on their performance on a form completed by the workplace supervisor.
Indicative Syllabus After introductory sessions on preparing for placement together with their knowledge of media law and practical skills acquired during Year 2, this module allows the student to undertake a sustained period of official industrial placement in the workplace. The placement location and dates must be approved in advance by the Tutor before approaches are made and before acceptance by the student if offered a place.. The Course has to be sensitive to over-reliance on the same employers and will be seeking to maintain a good relationship with a range of contacts who are willing to take further students in future years. To help maintain this position tutors will advise students on the appropriateness of their desired placement taking into account prior experience, career aspirations and practical considerations.
