Brief Description | Using an action research model, this module is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the relevance of research to the development of praxis. Research skills will be developed through the critical evaluation of published research, the design and implementation of a small-scale study, and the development of well-supported coherent analyses and arguments. |
Indicative Syllabus | Through lectures and collaborative group work students will be introduced to the issues pertaining to the initiation and management of a small-scale action research based project. Drawing on their critical evaluation of published research and other scholarly texts, students will design, implement and present the findings of their action research project. |
Learning Outcomes | Knowledge and understanding 1) an enhanced level of knowledge and understanding of an aspect of their discipline; 2) an understanding of research paradigms and research bias 3) a knowledge of action research procedures Skills 1) apply the methods and techniques that they have learned to review, consolidate, extend and apply their knowledge and understanding, to initiate and carry out projects; 2) critically evaluate arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data (that may be incomplete), to make judgements, and to frame appropriate questions to achieve a solution, or identify a range of solutions- to a problem 3) manage their own learning, making use of scholarly reviews and primary data sources |
