Brief Description

The purpose of this module is to drive forward knowledge, skills and understanding of the student teacher in inclusive practice for SEN and disability. It has been devised to help trainees remove barriers to achievement for pupils with a wide range of needs and impairments and also to share approaches and resources to support trainees as they enter a career in teaching.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will focus on three main areas:

1.     Development and diversity

2.     Exemplifications of the key principles in relation to the areas of need set out in the SEN Code of Practice (DfES, 2001)

3.     Workplace management and partnerships

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

Development and diversity:

1)     Inclusion, the individual and the environment;

2)     Development, diversity and curriculum;

3)     Planning and assessment for individual and diverse learning needs;

4)     Removing barriers for disabled pupils;

5)     Understand key aspects of the Code of Practice (DfES, 2001 and the DDA (DfES, 2002);

6)     The learning needs of pupils with specific learning difficulties; speech, language and communication difficulties; autism spectrum condition; behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.



Skills:

1)     Create an inclusive learning environment;

2)     Manage individual and diverse needs in a learning environment;

3)     Work in partnership with outside agencies, adults, parents / carers, pupils.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 20%
Directed and student private study: 80%
