Brief Description | The module aims to develop the students’ ability to critically analyse and reflect upon broader aspects of teaching and learning mathematics. This will involve analysis of current research, Ofsted and Primary National Strategy reports, the role of mathematics in other curriculum subjects and the development of higher order thinking skills for both students and pupils. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module builds upon BED246 enhancing students’ knowledge in planning, teaching and assessing the mathematics curriculum. Lectures and practical workshops will deepen students understanding of mathematics at Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and 2. Particular attention will be given to developing student’s understanding of ways in which the learners’ ability to use and apply mathematics can be developed in practical tasks, real problem solving, other curriculum areas and investigating within mathematics itself. The delivery of the module will be differentiated according to the route students take (3 - 7 or 5 - 11). |
Learning Outcomes | Knowledge and Understanding: On successful completion of the module the student should: 1) Have a secure knowledge and understanding of the National Numeracy Strategy, the Foundation Stage, and the National Curriculum for mathematics and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across they age and ability range for which they are trained; 2) Know how children develop and progress in mathematics and that their progress can be affected by a range of developmental, social, religious, ethnic, cultural and linguistic influences; 3) Know how to make effective personalised provision for those they teach; 4) Understand the nature of mathematics as a powerful tool for calculating, predicting and communicating effectively across all subjects 5) Have secured their knowledge and understanding of the purposes of different strategies for assessment, recording and reporting in promoting mathematical learning, in particular the relationship between assessment, target setting and planning; 6) Be secure in their knowledge of how and when to use ICT to enhance their personal knowledge and understanding of current research and developments in mathematics. Skills: 1) Discuss mathematics at a professional level, reading inspection reports and research with understanding; 2) Make links between mathematics and other subjects; 3) Use teaching approaches that develop the learners’ powers of reasoning, deduction, logic and communication; 4) Use interactive teaching methods; 5) Plan for progression and continuity. |
