Brief Description | The module aims to develop the students’ ability to critically analyse and reflect upon broader aspects of teaching and learning English. This will involve analysis of current research, OfSTED and Primary National Strategy reports, the role of English in other curriculum subjects and the development of higher order thinking skills for both students and learners. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module builds upon BED145 and BED245 enhancing students’ knowledge in planning, teaching and assessing the English curriculum, as well as, supporting learners to enjoy and achieve (Every Child Matters). Students will use research evidence and OfSTED reports to deepen their knowledge and understanding and inform their practice. An emphasis is placed upon ‘higher level teaching skills’, including differentiated planning based on assessment. The delivery of the module will be differentiated according to the route students take (3 - 7 or 5 - 11). |
Learning Outcomes | Knowledge and Understanding: 1) Have a secure knowledge and understanding of English; 2) Have a secure knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Communication Language and Literacy /National Curriculum for English at Key Stage 1 and 2; 3) Have a secure knowledge and understanding of literacy and language development and are able to assess this against The National Curriculum level descriptions; 4) Have a secure knowledge and understanding how to use ICT effectively to teach English and to support their professional development, including research; 5) Make appropriate use of a range of monitoring, assessment and recording strategies to evaluate pupils’ progress towards planned learning objectives in English and use this information to improve their own planning and teaching; 6) Have a secure understanding of the contribution language and literacy make to the development of higher order thinking skills. Skills: 1) Discuss English as a subject at a professional and well informed level; 2) Make appropriate links between English and other subjects 3) Read inspection reports, as well as, recent and relevant research with critical understanding; 4) Critically evaluate and justify the use of a range of strategies, approaches, and resources for the planning, teaching and assessment of Communication Language and Literacy in the Early Years Foundation Stage /the 3 attainment targets within the primary English National Curriculum at KS1 /KS2; 5) Be confident in monitoring, assessment, recording and reporting learners’ progress and achievements in conjunction with the Early Years Foundation Stage/ National Curriculum Attainment Targets and Level Descriptors; 6) Consolidate their ability to capture and maintain learners’ interest through the ways they read and write for them |
