Brief Description | The module further develops and builds on students’ knowledge and understanding of a range of professional issues related to current practice in primary schools. The module links directly to serial and final Block School Experience. The delivery of the module will be differentiated according to the route students take (3 - 7 or 5 - 11). |
Indicative Syllabus | This module aims to further develop students’ knowledge and understanding of educational principles and issues relevant to primary education through lectures, interactive seminars, collaborative workshops and independent study. Key elements of the module include; 1) The professional roles and responsibilities of the teacher – planning for pupils’ learning, continuity and progression, management and organisation, learning and teaching strategies, and the role of formative and summative strategies in the assessment of pupils’ attainment and progression; 2) The teacher’s role as learning champion in the children’s workforce; 3) The role of values, research and reflection in personal and professional development. Students will be encouraged to make more overt links between theory and practice by reflecting on their observations and experience in the workplace and relevant literature, thereby enabling them to review practice and set targets as NQTs. |
Learning Outcomes | Knowledge and Understanding: 1) Have a well developed knowledge and understanding of the key issues in teaching and learning, pupil assessment and record keeping, organisation and management, and the promotion of positive behaviour; 2) Understand their professional roles and responsibilities, including the statutory frameworks relating to teachers’ responsibilities as part of the children’s workforce; 3) Have developed deeper insights as to the role of the teacher as part of a multidisciplinary team, working in partnership with a range of agencies and stakeholders, including parents and carers. Skills: 1) Apply conceptual understandings appropriately; 2) Analyse and critical evaluating information in professional contexts; 3) Apply reading and research skills to promote their own professional development; 4) Communicate with a variety of audiences for a variety of purposes; 5) Self-evaluate practice, and identify their personal development needs through mentoring and coaching. |
