Brief Description

The module aims to prepare trainee teachers, with subject strength in history, for their role as subject specialists in the primary school.

Indicative Syllabus

This module explores the teaching of history across the Early Years Foundation Stage and KS1 and KS2. It focuses on the role of the subject specialist in respect of planning, resourcing and assessment. The module also explores more complex curricular issues such as the links with the core skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT and citizenship.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

1)     A detailed knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and relevant N.C programmes of study;

2)     Secure knowledge of the subject of those aspects of the subject taught at EYFS, KS1 and KS2;

3)     An understanding of whole school issues in the planning and teaching of History and an introduction to the role of the subject specialist.



Skills:

1)     Access recent inspection evidence and relevant research evidence on teaching and learning in the subject and know how to use this to inform and improve their teaching and promote development and well being;

2)     Assess learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills in history;

3)     Plan for progression and differentiation;

4)     Use the key skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT in history lessons as set out in the Primary National Strategy.
