Brief Description

This module aims to prepare trainee teachers, with a subject strength in religious education, for their role as specialists in the primary school.

Indicative Syllabus

In this module, students will further develop their understanding of the roles of religious beliefs, practices and the development of spirituality. They will critically evaluate a range of teaching and learning approaches appropriate to children at FS, KS1 and KS2. They will explore a range of planning, teaching and assessment issues in depth, to promote RE’s potential in cross-curricular planning.  They will also consider their potential roles in acts of Collective Worship in schools.

Learning Outcomes Knowledge and Understanding:
  1. A secure knowledge of the areas taught as part of the locally agreed syllabus for RE;
  2. An understanding of how RE can promote inclusion through effective learning and teaching strategies;
  3. An understanding of whole school issues in the planning, teaching and assessment of RE, with regard to the management, organisation and resourcing of such a whole school approach;
  4. An understanding of the place and practice of acts of collective worship.
  5. A detailed knowledge and understanding of the relevant Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and Key Stages 1 and 2 guidance, as contained in national non-statutory guidance.


Skills:

  1. Know how to plan for differentiation and progression;
  2. Know how to access a range of evidence, including OfSTED inspection reports and relevant research on teaching and learning in the subject, and know how to use this to inform and improve their teaching and promote children’s development and well-being;
  3. Demonstrate a capacity to formulate a logically reasoned line of thinking that is cogent and coherent, and which is founded on sound knowledge and practice;
  4. Articulate they can utilise the professional skills necessary to effect change in school, namely to articulate, debate and communicate effectively with colleagues;
  5. Demonstrate the capacity to reflect on practice.
