Brief Description

In this module students will extend their experience of art through individual exploration of a subject in a project designed to have potential as a model in educational settings.  Other activities have been selected to develop the knowledge and understanding required to inform the teaching of Art at the Early Years Foundation Stage and at Key Stages 1 & 2 and to contribute further to students meeting the standards for QTS.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will identify subjects with potential for use in educational settings with children. They will explore these at their own level through a range of processes and media whilst considering the scope and nature of practical activities which would enable learners to relate to the subject.  Students will extend their knowledge of artists appropriate for use with learners and the potential of the artist in residence model. Topics to extend their understanding and prepare them for the work place will include:

  • Assessment and progression;
  • Differentiation and providing for inclusion;
  • Using sketchbooks for exploring & developing ideas;
  • The use of ICT;
  • The role of the subject specialist;
  • Case studies of artists in residence;
  • Promoting the visual learning environment;
  • Health & safety considerations;
  • Creativity and a resource rich curriculum.
Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

1)     A secure knowledge and understanding of modes of exploration in a range of media;

2)     Secure knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in gathering resources and materials to stimulate and develop ideas;

3)     Secure understanding of the processes involved in applying, to their own work, knowledge and understanding derived from the work of artists, craftspeople and designers ;

4)     Sound knowledge of an appropriate range of artists, their works and techniques to select those who can be used

5)     Effectively to promote pupils’ understanding of works of art and the roles and purposes of artists working in different times and cultures ;

6)     Secure knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in responding to and evaluating art, craft and design, including their own and others’ work;



Skills:

1)     Display enhanced skill and sensitivity in the exploration of processes and media ;

2)     Demonstrate the creative, imaginative and practical skills needed to record observations, express ideas and feelings, and design and make artefacts ;

3)     Deploy a focussed and original range of practical approaches including ICT in creating images and artefacts ;

4)     Demonstrate intention and focus in pursuing artistic ideas to fruition including the review and modification of their work as it progresses ;

5)     Use teaching and learning objectives to plan lessons, and sequences of lessons, showing how they will assess pupils’ learning ;

6)     Select and prepare resources taking into account pupils’ interests and their language and cultural backgrounds.
