Brief Description The module aims to develop the trainee teachers’ ability to teach English at the Foundation Stage and across Key Stages 1 and 2. Trainee teachers will develop their knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage (QCA, 2008) and National Curriculum (1999) as well as the Primary National Strategy (2006) and new framework for teaching literacy. They will use their knowledge to plan for, teach and assess children’s learning in English. The module will also further develop trainee teachers’ subject knowledge and understanding that underpins the teaching of English.
Indicative Syllabus This module covers the key strands of speaking and listening, reading, and writing and enables trainee teachers to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding in all of these areas so that they are able to plan, teach and assess these within in the workplace. The delivery of the module will be differentiated according to the route students take (3 - 7 or 5 - 11).
Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding
1)  Have deepened their knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the National Curriculum for English at Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and recognize its importance as a vehicle for teaching across the curriculum;
2)  Have developed their knowledge and understanding of the methods and expectations set out in the Primary National Strategy Framework for Teaching (2006) and other relevant initiatives;
3)  Know how to use skills in ICT to teach English and support their wider professional development, including research;
4)  Have deepened their knowledge and understanding about the purposes of assessment, recording and reporting in promoting learning and, in particular, the relationship between formative assessment and  planning and how to use information to evaluate teaching and raise levels of attainment;
5)  Take account of the varying interests, experiences and achievements of learners and know how they are affected by a range of developmental, social, religious, ethnic, cultural and linguistic influences;
6)  Can promote active and independent learning that enables learners to think for themselves and to plan and manage their own learning; and making personalized provision for learners when required.



Skills
1)  Discuss English as a subject at a professional and increasingly informed level; make appropriate links between English and other subjects;
2)  Read inspection reports as well as recent and relevant research with increasingly critical understanding;
3)  Critically evaluate and justify with increasing confidence the use of a range of strategies, approaches, and resources for the planning, teaching and assessment of the communication, language and literacy at Foundation Stage and the three attainment targets within the primary English National Curriculum at KS1 and 2;
4)  Assess and plan for progression and continuity with increasing accuracy and reflect this in teaching and evaluation;
5)  Recognise the importance of supporting and challenging learners with differing learning needs and link this to teaching, evaluation and assessment
