Brief Description The module develops and builds on students’ knowledge and understanding of a range of learning and teaching issues related to current practice in the workplace and beyond to ensure success for all children. The module links directly to serial and block school experience.
Indicative Syllabus This module aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of educational principles and issues relevant to primary education through a range of modes of delivery including: lectures, independent study, seminars and workshops. The key elements of the module are planning, creating and sustaining a purposeful learning environment, learning and teaching, assessment, monitoring and reporting. Within these key elements there will be a focus on issues such as: the nature of professional development; refining lesson plans and sequences of lessons; developing medium term plans; developing effective strategies for managing and organising learners; assessment, monitoring and reporting; catering for a range of diverse needs and planning for personalised learning; providing learning experiences that promote inclusive practice and team working and collaboration with colleagues. Students will be encouraged to make links between theory and practice by reflecting on their observations and experience in the workplace, discussions and relevant reading material.
Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding
1)   Be familiar with the standards for Qualified Teacher Status set out in the revised standards for the recommendation of QTS (2007);
2)   Have developed their ability to increasingly evaluate theories of learning and teaching and their practical application;
3)   Have an increased knowledge and understanding of the statutory legislation and other relevant initiatives related to the primary curriculum in England and  Walesand in ECM;
4)   Have deepened their understanding of relevant policies, practice and legislation concerning inclusive education and personalised provision for learners;
5)   Have deepened their understanding of the principles underpinning the creation of a purposeful and safe learning environment;
6)   Be familiar with a range of teaching, learning and behaviour management strategies (informed by theory and practice) and know how to adapt them.



Skills
1)   Analyse and evaluating research evidence and using this to inform practice in schools;
2)   Use positive approaches to managing behaviour;
3)   Produce medium term plans that demonstrate an understanding of statutory requirements and cross-curricular opportunities to promote learning;
4)   Promote spiritual, moral, social and cultural development throughout their teaching;
5)   Use a range of formative assessment strategies to inform lesson plans and sequences of lessons;
6)   Write medium term plans demonstrating continuity and progression.
