Brief Description The student teacher will develop subject and professional knowledge in a primary language (including inter-cultural understanding), as well as examine whole school approaches related to ethos, policy; teaching practice; assessment and monitoring and reflection and evaluation.
Indicative Syllabus

This module will aim to

  • Further enhance and extend the core training that the trainees will receive in the primary curriculum;
  • Further improve and enhance trainees’ existing language skills (Spanish);
  • Explore the pedagogy of teaching foreign languages; to broaden and deepen the trainees’ pedagogical understanding of the teaching and learning of Spanish as a foreign language and English as a foreign language in the primary school;
  • Further enhance trainees’ intercultural understanding.

The students will 

  • Attend taught sessions; 
  • Undertake Stage I and Stage II School Experience in local Partnership schools where they will have opportunities to co-plan and teach Primary Language lessons
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding

Successful completion of this module will enable trainees to

  • Have a working knowledge of the KS 2 languages framework and being able to teach Primary Languages to children at key stage 2 (KS2)
  • Demonstrate an increased awareness of a country's culture, enabling the trainee to put language into context, and reflect this in their teaching
  • Develop knowledge and understanding about language learning theories and strategies


ii. Skills

Successful completion of this module will enable trainees to

  • Further develop their foreign language skills in the chosen language including additional linguistic up-skilling of trainees during the course in two areas:

      -  educational language (to deliver curriculum areas while on placement), provision of lexica 
      -  social language (to deliver curriculum areas while on placement) 

  • Plan appropriate teaching and learning opportunities
