Brief Description

In this module students will extend their experience of art through experimentation with the tools and techniques involved in collage, frottage, painting and sculpture whilst working on a variety of scales; and, through considering the practice of art teaching in educational settings.  Activities have been selected to develop the knowledge and understanding required to inform the teaching of Art at the Early Years Foundation Stage and at Key Stages 1 & 2 and to contribute further to students meeting the standards for QTS.

Indicative Syllabus

A range of processes and media with potential for use in educational settings with learners will be considered and explored through practical activities.  Students will develop an understanding of the requirements of the National Curriculum for Art and become familiar with the curriculum guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage as well as extend their knowledge of artists appropriate for use in school. Topics to extend students understanding and prepare them for working with learners will include:

·         Strategies for teaching, learning and assessment in the subject;
·         Developing learners’ art vocabularies;
·         Enhancing the visual environment;
·         Using works of art with learners;
·         Learners’ responses to art works;
·         Organising museum and gallery visits;
·         Artists from the outside community working in the school;
·         Multicultural references for art teaching;
·         Opportunities to extend practical experience to enable learners to use skills for their own enjoyment and well -being..

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
1)       A secure knowledge and understanding of the properties and potential of the range of media commonly available in educational settings for young children;
2)       Sufficient understanding of the range of work in art and design to be able to teach the subject in the key stages for which they are being trained;
3)       A secure understanding of how art activities can be planned, delivered and assessed to ensure successful learning and well being;
4)       Sufficient knowledge of an appropriate range of artists, their works and techniques to select those who can be used effectively to promote learners’ understanding of works of art and the roles and purposes of artists working in different times and cultures;
5)       The knowledge and understanding to select and prepare art resources and plan for their safe and effective organisation.



Skills:
1)       Display enhanced skill and sensitivity in the handling of a wide range of implements, media and surfaces;
2)       Deploy an extended range of practical approaches in creating images and artefacts;
3)       Demonstrate intention and competence in using key skills relating to activities in art, craft and design;
4)       Employ with increasing effectiveness the formal elements and relationships that are relevant to production in a range of media (e.g. composition, tone, texture, form etc.)
5)       Effectively manage themselves and their activities in pursuing
6)       The completion of work from inception to conclusion.
