Brief Description

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of approaches to the teaching of Knowledge and Understanding of the World at Foundation Stage and several National Curriculum geography Breadth of Study units across KS1 and 2.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will focus on several units of work at the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Each unit will be taught over several sessions in a manner which models the way the units should be taught with primary school learners. Each unit will explore a sequence of activities that will address geographical localities, themes and skills. There will be opportunities in this module for the students to investigate the potential of fieldwork in geographical learning.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
1)       Knowledge and understanding of the selected geographical themes and localities;
2)       Knowledge about methods of geographical enquiry and approaches relevant to different localities and themes;
3)       Knowledge and understanding of teaching approaches that are appropriate for the Early Years Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 and promote children’s development and well being;
4)       Knowledge about the management and organisation of outdoor learning experiences and fieldwork including health and safety issues.
5)       Knowledge of the ways in which children can be encouraged to participate in decision making and in supporting the community through geography lessons



Skills:
1)       Plan sequences of activities which promote geographical learning;
2)       Assess learners' geographical learning.
