Brief Description

This module aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to plan, teach and assess art. There is a particular emphasis on cross curricular planning and planning for progression. During this module there will be opportunities for students to work with children and put the principles of assessment for learning into practice

Indicative Syllabus

Students will explore key aspects of subject knowledge, skills and understanding and will have opportunities for independent research and studio practice.  They will further develop practical and analytical skills through the use of a range of media and scale in the EYFS, KS1 and KS2 which will inform creative and challenging approaches to the teaching of art .Planning cross curricular units of work that promote good progress and outcomes by pupils in relation to the statutory requirements in art will inform their work in school. Students will use assessment information to inform planning and planning for differentiation.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of developments in art, through their secure knowledge of art and design in the curriculum.

2. Know how to plan and teach well-structured sequences of lessons in cross curricular units of work that promote good progress and outcomes by pupils in relation to the statutory requirements for art.

3. Recognise the benefits and challenges of cross curricular approaches to teaching and learning.

4. Demonstrate an awareness of pupils’ capabilities and their prior knowledge, and their teaching will be planned to build on these.

5. Provide effective learning opportunities for all pupils, with a focus on an understanding of the three principles of inclusion where they will set suitable learning challenges; respond to pupils’ diverse learning needs and overcome potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils.
