Brief Description | The module aims to develop the students’ ability to critically analyse and reflect upon broader aspects of teaching and learning in the core subjects of English, mathematics and science. This will involve analysis of current research, recent curriculum initiatives and developments and relevant theory. The module will include some emphasis on the role of good quality subject specific teaching in developing effective cross-curricular planning. It will also provide an opportunity for students to extend their skills in relation to the assessment of children’s learning. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module builds upon BE5005, BE5006 and BE5007 by enhancing students’ knowledge in planning, teaching and assessing subjects in the core subjects of English, mathematics and science. Lectures and practical workshops will deepen students understanding of the core subjects across the primary years. Particular attention will be given to developing students’ ability to plan creative learning opportunities and to tailor teaching to meet individual needs. Students will be able to critically evaluate the range of teaching and learning approaches that characterise successful core subject teaching. An emphasis will be placed on critical analysis and evaluation in order to enhance future practice and broaden subject expertise. There will be a particular focus on meeting current national priorities for teaching and learning. Students will be able to provide effective learning opportunities for all pupils, with a focus on an understanding of the three principles of inclusion: - setting suitable learning challenges - responding to pupils’ diverse learning needs - overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils |
Learning Outcomes | Successful students will have: 1. Secure knowledge and understanding of the statutory documentation, non-statutory guidance and related pedagogy within the core subjects of English, Maths and Science to enable them to teach effectively across the age range for which they are trained 2. The ability to plan effective, cross curricular, creative and contextualised learning opportunities within English, Maths and Science 3. The knowledge and skills needed to identify and address individual learning needs, and to support children to overcome misconceptions and barriers to learning within English, Maths and Science 4. A critical approach to self evaluation in order to enhance future practice and to broaden subject expertise. 5. A secure understanding of national priorities in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science and ability to implement these in practice. |
