Brief Description

The purpose of this module is to drive forward the knowledge, skills and understanding of the student teacher in inclusive practice through a recognition of individual and diverse learning needs in mainstream and special educational provision. It has been devised to help trainees remove barriers to achievement for pupils with a wide range of individual needs and impairments and also to share approaches and resources to support them on the final school placement and in their NQT year.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will focus on:

1. Values in to practice underpinning inclusion and a recognition of individual and diverse learning needs in mainstream and special educational provision.

2. The provision of effective learning opportunities for all pupils, with a focus on an understanding of the three principles of inclusion:

- setting suitable learning challenges;

- responding to pupils’ diverse learning needs;

- overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils.

3. Exemplifications of the key principles in relation to the areas of need set out in the national guidelines underpinning policy, procedures and practice related to SEND

4. Classroom management and partnerships

5. Students’ will be required to focus their learning whilst on school placement on the development of positive and appropriate strategies to reduce underachievement in classrooms and to remove barriers to learning.

6. Interested students will have the opportunity to undertake a paired four week extended school placement that will enable them to extend their knowledge and practice in SEND at partnership special schools, Communication and Interaction Centres and with SENCos in mainstream.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should:

1. Critically evaluate how the values related to equity, entitlement and equality of opportunity inform practice

2. Critically examine how a recognition of individual learning needs can impact positively on their effectiveness as a teacher and in promoting inclusive practice

3. Critically examine how to appropriately plan and assess for individual and diverse learning needs

4. Critically examine how to remove barriers for disabled pupils

5. Critically examine the national guidelines underpinning principles, policy, procedures and practice related to SEND

6. Critically examine the learning needs of pupils with specific learning difficulties; speech, language and communication difficulties; autism spectrum condition; behavioural, emotional and social difficulties

7. Critically examine classroom management and partnerships

8. Critically examine how to create an inclusive learning environment

9. Critically examine how to manage individual and diverse needs in a learning environment

10. Critically examine how to work in partnership with outside agencies, adults, parents / carers, pupils
