Brief Description

This module aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to plan, teach and assess art. There is a particular emphasis on planning sequences of lessons and developing an understanding of the principle of planning for progression. During this module there will be opportunities for students to work with children.

Indicative Syllabus

Through application, students will develop artistic and creative skills and a wider knowledge and understanding of the subject of art.  They will have opportunities to develop practical and analytical skills through the use of a range of media and scale in the EYFS, KS1 and KS2. It is expected students will be both creative and innovative whilst challenging approaches to the teaching of art. They will plan sequences of lessons as well as learn the principles of planning for progression through their understanding of assessment in the subject.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the statutory curriculum requirements and

2. Demonstrate an understanding of the underlying concepts and principles that define the distinctive nature of the subject and be able to demonstrate a strengthening understanding of developments in the subject along with a secure knowledge of art and curriculum areas.

3. Select appropriate teaching resources and teaching and learning approaches and justify their use in a particular lesson; this knowledge and understanding will enable students to know how to plan and teach well-structured lessons and sequences of lessons that promote good progress and outcomes by pupils.

4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to assess pupils’ work in art.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of inclusive values and learn how to interpret Programmes of Study appropriately for a diversity of learning needs, in order to access all children to learning in the subject.
