Brief Description | The module provides the student with the opportunity to gain an advanced critical understanding of the psychological, psycho-physiological and motor control development of expertise, and critically examine a range of contemporary issues affecting expert performance. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will examine: • Contemporary issues affecting expert performance. For example, talent identification, organisational stress and athlete well being • Cognitive and perceptual processes of skill acquisition and motor control, including the psychological continuum of novice to expert performance • The psychophysiology of expert performance |
Learning Outcomes | On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
1) Critically evaluate and apply knowledge of key contemporary issues that impact on elite performance to enhance well being and performance.
2) Critically analyse the cognitive, perceptual and motor programme development of skill acquisition and apply in-depth knowledge of motor programme development and skill acquisition to enhance learning
3) Critically appraise the psychological and psycho-physiological markers of expertise development.
4) Employ and apply relevant technical skills within a psychology laboratory.
5) Exhibit technical writing skills.
6) Apply theory to practice within a specialised context.
