Brief Description |
The module provides the student with the opportunity to critically examine key psychological theories that will enable the in-depth understanding, facilitation, application and evaluation of sporting behaviour. |
Indicative Syllabus |
The module will examine:
- Motivational theory and motivational climates for enhanced sport performance.
- The impact of social processes on sport performance, including issues of leadership, social support, group processes and communication systems.
- The impact of individual difference on sport performance, including personality, gender issues, environmental and cultural influences.
- The role of the sport practitioner within the sport psychology field and pathways of professional development.

Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to: 1) Critically analyse and apply advanced theoretical models and frameworks of sporting and exercise behaviour. 2) Analyse and critically evaluate the effect of motivational theory and motivational climate on sporting and exercise behaviour. 3) Synthesise social processes and individual differences, and critically evaluate their impact on sporting and exercise behaviour. 4) Critically evaluate the role and expectations of the sport and exercise practitioner, and demonstrate an awareness of appropriate routes for professional development. 5) Employ models of reflective practice to facilitate professional development within the sport and exercise field. 6) Engage confidently, autonomously and competently in academic and professional communication with others. 7) Employ a range of group work skills by working effectively with a group as leader or member. .
