Brief Description | This module considers current debates in sport and exercise physiology. Such debates revolve around how the body responds and adapts to exercise and the physiologic demands of different activities and sports. Measurement and analysis approaches are often a key element of these debates. Students will focus on the applied implications of these debates for sport performance and health. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will examine: • The range of relevant literature and the importance of the peer review process. • A critical review of current debates in the sport and exercise physiology literature. • Building an evidence base for interventions in sport and exercise. • Application of knowledge from current debates to sport performance and health contexts. |
Learning Outcomes | On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1) Demonstrate a familiarity with the breadth of literature informing current debates in sport and exercise physiology.
2) Critically evaluate literature relating to sport and exercise physiology.
3) Use physiological literature innovatively to develop a robust evidence base for interventions in exercise and sport.
4) Demonstrate critical awareness of the physiologic response during and following exercise, and adaptations to exercise training in both health and sport contexts.
5) Competently communicate complex physiological debates and their implications for practice in a written and oral form.
