Brief Description This module gives a broad overview of the many facets of public health and enables practitioners to explore public health issues pertinent to their area of practice. Additionally, students will be encouraged to locate aspects of their interest or practice within a public health context.
Indicative Syllabus

The module will examine
a) Introduction to public health including: health determinants;
b) Philosophical foundations to include: health behaviour versus sickness behaviour;
c) Epidemiology and demographics;
d) Infectious and non-infectious diseases;
e) Political and ethical issues;
f) Facilitating change at individual and collective level;
g) Community involvement;
h) Multi-sectorial and cross-agency collaboration.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
1. synthesise a definition of public health relevant to their own field
2. demonstrate understanding of current trends in public health
3. critically analyse the affect politics has on public health;
4. evaluate the relationship between social inequalities and health inequalities
5. Synthesise behavioural theory and work to a model that most suits their understanding of human behaviour
6. critically examine development theory as it relates to leadership roles for championing public health
