Brief Description This module seeks to engage practitioners in the enhancement, expansion and regulation of advanced professional practice within their own clinical setting.
Indicative Syllabus

This module will examine
a) Role and development of advanced professional practice
b) The nature of advanced practice:

  • Professional judgement and decision making
  • Legal and ethical issues in advanced practice
  • Quality assurance, clinical governance and risk management
  • Budgetary planning

c) Contemporary challenges for advanced practice – workforce planning, bench marking practice
d) Leading and developing practice and personnel
e) Influence of health policy on advanced practice – perceptions of Department of Health, regulatory bodies and practice
f) User acceptance of advanced practitioners

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  1. Critique the nature of advanced practice;
  2. Critically debate and rationalise the current social, political and economic dimensions of advanced practice;
  3. Promote a vision that incorporates advanced practice within professional agendas;
  4. Critically reflect on the responsibilities of the advanced practitioner;
  5. Engage in developing health professionals in their professional development;
  6. Within the scope of advanced practice, evaluate a range of quality mechanisms that can be used in relevant areas of work.
