Brief Description This module is designed for health practitioners working in a variety of care settings. The module provides opportunities for students to develop knowledge, critical insight and skills in the management of acute conditions. It adopts a client centred approach and evaluates the patho-physiology of acute disease. The module will accommodate a broad range of acute illnesses.
Indicative Syllabus

The module will examine
a) The client journey through the disease process
b) The application of holistic health and social care assessment.
c) The physiological and psychological aspects of acute episodes upon clients in social and clinical settings.
d) The psychological impacts on carers and families in managing the acute episodes of their clients/family members.
e) The management and recognition of ethical decisions related to continuation or discontinuation of treatment.
f) Management of acute episodes, including respiratory, neurological, metabolic, psychological, circulatory, musculo skeletal and trauma.
g) The dichotomies of concordance and compliance.
h) Clinical decision-making

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse and evaluate examples of, managing acute episodes appropriate to their area of practice;
  2. Critically appraise the effect of acute episodes on the client, family and carer in their social setting;
  3. Describe and critically evaluate markers of disease progression, recognising deterioration and understanding how this impacts on the identification of those that require referral and or intervention;
  4. Critically analyse and appraise the patho-physiology of acute episodes.
