Brief Description | This module enables participants to critically appraise and develop their own interpersonal skills in communicating in a range of professional contexts through the analysis and synthesis and critical evaluation of key theories and models of communication. |
Indicative Syllabus | A revision of theories of communication; An evaluation of applications and appropriateness of theoretical models across cultures and professional contexts; Reflective practice and self assessment; Critical evaluation of own and others' use of power in relation to service delivery. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to: a) Critically appraise a range of key theories and models of interpersonal communication with reference to own practice and context. b) Critically reflect on the utilisation of effective and appropriate communication strategies. c) Apply and evaluate principles of effective communication appropriate to a range of social contexts e.g. interpersonal, family or group, or organisation. d) Critically evaluate mechanisms to empower patients, clients and their carers to influence and use available services to the full, and to participate in decisions concerning their care. e) Critically analyse ideological and professional barriers to empowering models of communication and propose strategies for development and change ii.
