Brief Description

This module is designed to develop advanced understanding of the principal theories and techniques of corporate finance and valuation focusing on: Cost of capital estimation, distribution policy, investment appraisal, international finance, techniques of risk management, and valuation of corporate entities.

Indicative Syllabus

A Financial management objectives and conflicting stakeholder interests
B The impact of environmental issues on corporate objectives and on governance
C Financial strategy formulation and ethical issues in financial management
D Corporate valuation and strategies for acquisitions and mergers
E Methods of and advances in investment appraisal
F Impact of financing on investment decisions and adjusted present values
G Application of option pricing theory in investment decisions
H International investment and financing decisions
I Impact of capital investment on financial reporting
J The nature of the equity and debt markets and sources of finance including hybrids
K The estimation of cost of capital
L Review of capital structure and distribution theory
M Option pricing theory and real options
N The valuation of intangibles
O Methods of interest rate risk and currency risk management

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Appraise the key financial decisions undertaken by a business enterprise.
b) Undertake sophisticated financial analysis, using publicly available data.
c) Critically assess the limitations of theory and practice in this area.

 



ii. Corporate Finance Skills
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Evaluate the role and responsibility of financial managers in meeting conflicting needs of stakeholders
b) Evaluate potential investment decisions and assess their financial and strategic consequences, both domestically and internationally
c) Assess and plan acquisitions and mergers as an alternative growth strategy
d) Evaluate and advise on alternative corporate re-organisation strategies
e) Apply and evaluate alternative advanced treasury and risk management techniques
f)  Evaluate the impact of macro economics and recognise the role of international financial institutions in the financial management of multinationals
g) Identify and assess the potential impact of emerging issues in finance and financial management.

iii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a)  Analyse and interpret financial literature
b)  Communicate through group based tutorial activities and written work of a variety of styles

Student directed study: approximately 80%
