Brief Description

This module engages with issues around rural and/or urban landscape.

The module will bring in current and historic landscape photography with students being introduced to considerations of landscape in relation to social, political and environmental perspectives.

Indicative Syllabus

Practical project work will provide the opportunity to explore the technical and aesthetic demands of Landscape photography, as well as the historic 'movements' and approaches to documenting topography. Students will be guided towards questioning the implications of the appropriation of the landscape through photography.

The module also requires students to organise and mount a solo or group exhibition of the topographic photographs produced. The scope of such an exhibition could vary considerably in term of the number of exhibitors, location of gallery/venue, the need for publicity material, private view, budget, fund raising, catalogue, etc. but should involve negotiation with external individuals, businesses or organizations.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1)    Demonstrate a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the cultural and historic positioning of Landscape photography.

2)    Demonstrate mastery and innovation in the use of a range of photographic equipment in relation to the technical challenges of Landscape photography.

3)    Analyse the socio-political context in which photojournalists and documentary photographers operate.

4)    Analyse evidence, arguments and assumptions to solve complex and unpredictable problems including editing and critiquing your own visual and written material, and that of others, to communicate effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

5)         Set goals, manage workloads to meet deadlines, evaluate and reflect upon learning and study skills as an independent learner, and develop a range of transferable skills to enhance ‘employability’.
