Brief Description

The Major Photographic Project module offers the opportunity for each third year student to greatly develop their body of work in their chosen area of photographic practice by creating a negotiated year long project or series of projects focused on their future career aspiration.

Indicative Syllabus

This module provides the opportunity for each third year student to greatly develop their body of work through a self initiated Major Photographic project or projects in their own chosen area of photographic practice. It provides the opportunity for students to focus on future career paths in Industry. This module will provide students with an opportunity to undertake a negotiated project with an explicit link to professional practice. The project should be created with reference to previous work in AD5752 and with a firm understanding of your current skills and skill gaps. Students will be expected to negotiate, and thereafter initiate their project or projects, with the advice of the module tutor. A proposal will be required in word-processed format and will form part of the assessable work. Included in the module is a Level 6 Work in Progress show and the opportunity to enter National & International photographic competitions.

Learning Outcomes

The knowledge and understanding derived from the module will vary according to the nature and scope of the project negotiated but it is expected that the students passing this module should be able to

 

1) demonstrate a high level of independent creative thinking, ideas generation and problem solving to meet their defined  project outcomes. To make informed judgments and opinions of your own and other’s work and reflect on past learning and undertake personal skills audits and skills action planning.

2) undertake and appreciate the planning, briefing others and costing  their major project, with full implementation of risk assessment and the observation of professional standards of health and safety. Be able to apply your advanced technical skills, critical and creative judgment to select the appropriate cameras, lighting equipment and use the relevant advanced digital workflow to successfully achieve the objectives and final outcomes of their major project

3) demonstrate and apply an advanced understanding of contemporary professional and appropriate methods of presentation and self- promotion including the production of a professional portfolio and organising exhibitions, archiving and sales.

4) demonstrate excellent self –motivation / direction, time keeping and presentation skills. To demonstrate excellent confidence and research skills, strong communication skills and take an active part in class debates.

5) Fully understand potential career and graduate progressions and demonstrate a sound knowledge of personal attributes, skills and abilities as they relate to professional employment or freelance employment.
