Brief Description

The module provides the opportunity to study in depth the professional practices and requirements of a photographer working in the media and focuses on shooting a real assignment to a high professional standard. Professional business aspects are included such as an overview of freelance business practice, quoting, gaining model releases etc. Opportunity for further professional interaction / further work experience / competition entry.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will produce practical work of a professional standard whilst demonstrating knowledge of sound professional practice.

Identify, research and present, potential individual career progression. Create individual branding and PR material. Opportunity for further professional interaction / further work experience / entry to International and National photographic competitions.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to

 

1) understand the different requirements and approaches to a range of photographic commissions and the commissioning structures of the editorial and advertising industries. Research, interview, negotiate and undertake appropriate work experience or professional liaison and engage with the leading professional photographic bodies,

2) demonstrate a high level of independent creative thinking, ideas generation and problem solving to meet a defined brief and deadline. To make informed judgments and opinions of your own and other’s work and reflect on past learning and undertake personal skills audits and skills action planning.

3) understand the professional relationship between client and photographer and demonstrate the ability to understand and appreciate planning, briefing and costing a photographic shoot, with full implementation of risk assessment and the observation of professional standards of health and safety. Be able to apply your advanced technical skills, critical and creative judgment to select the appropriate cameras, lighting equipment and use the relevant advanced digital workflow to successfully meet the requirements of a commission.

4) achieve and understand contemporary professional methods of presentation, self- promotion, marketing  and organising exhibitions, including budgeting, sponsorship, P.R., press releases, catalogues, archiving and sales.

5) demonstrate excellent self –motivation / direction, time keeping and presentation skills. To develop confidence and research skills, strong communication skills and take an active part in class debates.

6) fully understand their potential career and graduate progressions, demonstrate a sound knowledge of personal attributes, skills and abilities as they relate to professional employment or freelance employment.
