Brief Description

This module aims to present students with the opportunity of producing a wide range of advanced promotional material, whether it be for the promotion of a given product, service or the self-promotion of the individual for output to screen and/or print.

Based on research and analysis of the requirements and demands of industry particular to the students area of interest and/or across a range of specialisms with an explicit link to the professional, working environment related to their discipline area. The nature and scope of the promotional strategy and/or placement should be negotiated with the module tutor leading to the production of a proposal which will be revaluated throughout the process.

By the end of the module students should have gained a better working knowledge of current practice along with an ability to produce innovative and individual promotional materials.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will be required to prepare and present a body of work to potential clients. The promotion project must have a direct link with the world of work in that it should involve an external client, business, organisation, funding body, gallery or exhibition venue etc. or have a direct association with the career aspirations or preparation for employment of the student.

 

This will include the development of a professionally produced personal portfolio of work. This may include an actual and/or digital portfolio blog/website for promotion, CD/DVD or as an animated show reel; the exhibition and printing of books and promotional material; the identification and targeting of clients and the research, development and production of suitable and effective marketing and promotional material strategies and approaches. Particular emphasis will be placed on the continuous evaluation of the strengths and weakness of each student's promotional project.

Examples of appropriate projects include:

The presentation of printed books, comic projects or animations at book fairs, festivals or conventions

The organisation and mounting of a group or solo exhibition.

The preparation of material for self-promotion and entry to freelance practice or for employment.

This could include the design and production of personal freelance identity material.

The negotiation, organization and undertaking of a period of work placement in an organization or business or with a freelance designer, illustrator, artist, animator, craftsperson, appropriate to the career aspirations of the student.

On completion of the module students will be required to deliver a presentation of their final promotional strategy to their peers and module tutor/s

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1.     Identify and locate suitable and potential commercial platforms for their work (and/or individuals responsible for commissioning such work) and devise appropriate, targeted promotional material for these platforms

2.     Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of their personal attributes, skills and abilities as they relate to their potential progression to employment within an established organisation or as a freelance practitioner

3.     Initiate, design and manage the production of specific and targeted promotional materials across a range of media

4.     Communicate and negotiate with individuals and/or groups in relation to a work/professional environment appropriate to the students' discipline area;

5.     Critically review their promotional strategy to develop effective means of identifying and achieving career goals.

Develop and evaluate promotional materials in terms of identified and defined communication and professional objectives; recognise the importance of communicating positively, memorably, assertively, effectively and pleasantly with potential clients
