Brief Description

This module will provide students with an opportunity to undertake a negotiated project with an explicit link to the working environment of the students' area of study and/or to undertake a further period of work experience or professional practice. It allows the student to extend or develop the experience gained through AD5000. The student will also further their knowledge of, and skills in, presentation of both themselves and their artwork. Through written work and debate they will establish their place and goals within the contexts of contemporary practice.

Indicative Syllabus - - -

This module continues to prepare students for self-employment, employment or further study after graduation. Students are required to undertake a project and/or placement with an explicit link to the professional, working environment related to their discipline area. The nature and scope of the project and/or placement should be negotiated with the module tutor leading to the production of a Learning Contract prior to the commencement of the project or placement. The project and/or placement must have a direct link with the world of work in that it should involve an external client, business, organisation, funding body, gallery or exhibition venue etc. or have a direct association with the career aspirations or preparation for employment of the student.

Examples of appropriate projects include:

  1. The undertaking of a commissioned piece of art, design or media work with a real client
  2. The organisation and mounting of a group or solo exhibition to include considerations of the number of exhibitors, location of gallery/venue, the need for publicity material, private view, budget, fund raising, catalogue etc
  3. The negotiation, organisation and undertaking of a period of work placement in an organisation, business, school, or with a freelance designer, illustrator, photographer appropriate to the career aspirations of the student.

This module facilitates students updating their Personal Development Planning (PDP) in the light of experience gained, and skills and knowledge acquired, through reviewing the key lectures, workshops, placements and research undertaken during this module.  

Students will be required to maintain journals of their visits to galleries museums and exhibitions, and their research and investigations into other artists and their practices.

Students are also required to take part in, and contribute to, a series of seminars and presentations, also to be recorded in the form of notes and journals

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of employment opportunities and/or business practices within the creative industries as appropriate to their own discipline area.?
  2. Demonstrate a knowledge of entrepreneurial skills to support creative practice and enhance employability.
  3. Effectively communicate information and analyse evidence, arguments and assumptions to compile a structured report reflecting on employment opportunities and challenges within a specialist professional area.
  4. Critically review their Personal Development Planning to develop effective strategies towards identifying and achieving personal, academic and career goals; have a greater appreciation of the relationship between study skills, the acquisition of personal transferable skills and future employability.
  5. Plan, design and structure self-promotional material, including the continuing development of their CV, artist statements etc.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge and a critical understanding of the historical, contemporary and cultural contexts of their art practice and that of others;  be able to recognise, analyse and discuss such issues with others.
