Restrictions Available only to students taking Mass Communication (Single Honours Top Up degree), Media Production (Single Honours Top Up degree), and Visual Communication (Single Honours Top Up degree).
Brief Description

This module aims to develop a student's understanding and knowledge of some of the main theoretical paradigms used in visual communications, mass communications and media production. Emphasis will be placed upon developing advanced academic research abilities and an understanding of applying theories in practical contexts.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will expand upon students' knowledge of the continuities in visual communications, mass communications and media production theory by studying approaches to the analysis of mass communication in the media and arts more generally. Students will have the opportunity to focus upon an area of study that they wish to specialize in and which connects with their career aspirations. Delivery of the module will be supported by a series of guest lecturers discussing more specialized areas within visual communications, mass communications and media production, such as graphic design, international journalism, and film theory.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 

1) Demonstrate a sophisticated and extensive understanding of a range of  key critical theories.

2) Demonstrate a clear understanding of the theoretical approaches appropriate to the subject and the ability to illustrate such concepts with examples.

3) Demonstrate an appreciation of the need for a clear and effective structure to their study and an ability to offer both a general overview and close, rigorous attention to evidence.4) Demonstrate systematic organisational and time management skills.

5) Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
