Brief Description | Students will progress their Dissertation proposals to undertake research into, and cultural analysis of, an art and design related topic, producing either: 1. A formal written Dissertation of 7- 8,000 words or 2. A combined practice and theory research project of 3-4,000 words together with practical outcome. [Note that Dissertation proposals will generally be instigated at Level 5] |
Indicative Syllabus | p>Either 1 or 2:
1. A formal written Dissertation of 7- 8,000 words. Students will engage with a range of visual, cultural and/or media theory to develop a 7-8,000 word dissertation related to the production, consumption and/or representation of visual, textual and/or aural material relevant to their chosen discipline.
Students will be expected to demonstrate evidence of appropriate research and understanding, the ability to apply appropriate critical analysis to selected examples. Students will also be expected to organise their material into a coherent argument that addresses specific questions or concerns, or tests a proposition.
2. Major Research Project. Students will integrate theoretical research with practical experiment/research to produce an outcome which combines a text of 3-4,000 words with the production of visual material which together address specific research objectives.
Students will be expected to demonstrate appropriate making/design skills, evidence of research and understanding, the ability to apply appropriate critical analysis, and to organise the written component into a coherent outcome. |
Learning Outcomes | <p>1) Demonstrate the ability to research and synthesise information and concepts that underpin the articulation of a coherent argument/analysis addressed to a specific objective.</p> <p>2) </p> <p>Demonstrate an ability to critically review, consolidate and extend a systematic body of knowledge, utilising specialised skills and knowledge. </p><p>3) Show evidence that he/she is able to critically evaluate concepts and evidence from a range of sources.</p> <p>4) Demonstrate the ability to apply visual theory and analysis in a range of cultural contexts.</p> <p>5) Display an ability to transfer and apply diagnostic and creative skills and exercise significant judgement in a range of situations.</p> <p>Demonstrate autonomy through the ability to work independently and take responsibility for accessing resources and accountability for determining outcomes.</p> |
