Brief Description | The module will cover the practical use of Black & White film for image production, including advanced consideration of B/W developing and printing to exhibition and archive standards. The module also reflects on Photojournalism & Documentary Photography post World War II up to the 1970's. |
Indicative Syllabus | Students will produce a documentary project photographed on Black & White film. Students will develop films and supply black and white contact sheets from their shoot that will be discussed to agree the best selection of images. The contact sheets will also be interrogated to find the single frame that has the capability to be the lead image and potentially stand alone to tell the 'story'. Practical project work will provide the opportunity for technical demonstrations of advanced silver halide based black and white processing and printing, with consideration of the needs of the archive as well as for exhibition. The principles of lenses, image formation, exposure and development of light sensitive silver based materials will be covered. Students will also engage in considering the historic precedents and approaches of black & white photography and consider the impact of technical developments on photography's potential for documenting the world. Lectures will cover Photojournalism & Documentary Photography post World War II up to the 1970's. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1) Demonstrate detailed knowledge of a range of approaches to creating photographic documents, and the social and cultural relevance of ‘the archive’. 2) Understand the importance of COSHH and other Health and Safety. considerations in relation to traditional photographic chemistry and processes. 3) Demonstrate judgment in self-assessment and evaluation of the application of specialist techniques and processes as well as finished work. 4) Demonstrate understand of principles underpinning the application of camera, enlarger, lens, exposure and development of light sensitive materials. 5) Understand that importance of developing and considering skills in an integrated and holistic manner. 6) Utilise photography as a means of communication and investigation. 7) Debate the development of photography in relation to Photojournalism and Documentary Photography in the 20 th Century and the relevance of technical advances to the medium. |
