Brief Description

This module further explores the contemporary use of creative Editorial Photography building on skills and knowledge introduced in AD4741. Students will be encouraged to further develop creative ideas and brief solving using studio and location lighting techniques, large format, digital cameras, and location shooting.

Indicative Syllabus

A selection of creative editorial projects commensurate with contemporary professional practice will be undertaken in this module alongside study of contemporary creative editorial photography. These will be particularly linked to the conception, design, layout and photography required for the editorial content of a magazine of your own design. To create features, covering fashion, people, food etc.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should demonstrate further understanding and improvement in the following:

1) understanding of the many areas of activity that constitute professional Editorial photography, with special consideration given to audiences across various media platforms.

2) understanding of the aesthetic relationship of text and layout when allied to the photographic images, especially related to their mode of viewing as either print or digital.

3) creative thinking, ideas generation and brief solving - conceptual skills to meet a defined brief to a professional standard and working within the precise parameters of 'the brief' in terms of content, layout, style and technical competence.

4) using a full range of lighting, daylight, electronic flash, tungsten and the exploration of mixed and other light sources and camera equipment in a professional manner.

5) time management and delivery of work to deadline in a manner commensurate with contemporary professional practice, working within the context of a specific end use or audience.

6) effective communication of ideas and concepts, within the context of the work. Developing a competent ability to communicate, negotiate and collaborate with others.

7) A comprehensive overview and analysis of the work of key practitioners, linked with a demonstration of a greater understanding of possible career paths.
