Brief Description | This module will introduce students to some important themes and issues surrounding the illustration profession. It will combine an examination and analysis of the history of illustration in the specific context of the evolution of the professional practice of the individual illustrator. |
Indicative Syllabus | Lectures will focus on individual artists or groups of artists whose practice has reflected and influenced important social and cultural themes, both historical and contemporary. These will include subject areas such as political and social satire, protest, postmodernism, the handmade/naïve trend, animation, and the global market. The illustrator as entrepreneur and producer/publisher will be an important focus, as will be the changing role of the illustrator in the 21st century. Students will focus on a practicing illustrator to research, evaluate and produce a critical examination of their practice in essay form. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:
1. demonstrate skills in independent learning and use of research 2. critically examine and analyse the cultural and professional context of contemporary Illustration practice. 3. formulate independent judgements and articulate reasoned arguments through reflection, review and evaluation. 4. effectively interrogate and communicate ideas, principles and theories by written and oral means. 5. evaluate knowledge gained, reflecting upon his / her own practice |
