Brief Description

The module will introduce sequential Subjects covered will include the structuring of the elements required to craft a story concept by arranging images and words to create a visual narrative.

Story telling through the use of images. This module will explore narrative structures and traditions linear and non-linear narratives

 and the use of still and/or moving images in the recounting of stories Students will be introduced to; the history and development of the comic strip, Graphic novels and Bandes Desinees as a communications tool; the depiction of mood, emotion and elapsed time through sequential storytelling. Students will learn about the expression of original ideas through selected pictures and text styles . cinematic effects such as camera angles and lighting to effectively express ideas and concepts

applying spatial and mise en scène, contextual considerations ,and time to the development of narrative. .

Indicative Syllabus

Exercises and workshops - Analysing, deconstructing and producing sequences of images,  considering context, character, composition, character interaction, and identified narrative and communication objectives.

Aspects of specific focus will include viewpoint, mise en scène, moving though spaces, layout, text, lighting,  colour treatments, monochrome treatments.

Learning Outcomes p>A student passing this module should be able to:

 

understand the framework and principles of illustrative sequences, the relationship of image to text and text as a visual communication tool

analyse the cultural context of sequential illustration in different markets and locations

understand and be able to utilise the relationship between the audience and the images, in terms of time represented in two dimensional space.

control and manipulate the development of narrative in terms of images, text and sequence to reflect identified communication objectives

Articulate the visual and verbal communication of ideas and concepts

Develop 'making' and realisation skills,set goals, manage workloads to meet deadlines, evaluate and reflect upon their work in terms of the progression of current and future personal creative practice
